Model history

Phoenix’s 5 inch gauge DB V200 reproduced the outline of the German diesel hydraulic locomotive, with attention to the cab and interior as well as the bodywork.

The company archive preserves finished model photographs, building guides and construction records. The gallery includes close views of the cab and fittings.

A larger 7¼ inch gauge V200 project is also documented in the design records. This archive distinguishes that development work from the completed 5 inch model.

From the original Phoenix catalogue

The original Phoenix V200 catalogue described a 5 inch gauge diesel hydraulic model with an extensive etched-nickel detailing package, brass and polyurethane castings, four DC motors and a 24 V control system.

This is an archived design description, not a current MRW specification or availability statement.

Details from the archived Phoenix product specification. These describe the historical design and are not current MRW specifications.

The 7¼ inch DB V221 at Sinsheim

A contemporary report in the 7¼ Inch Gauge Society News documents an earlier German diesel project exhibited by Keith McDonald and Derek Payne under the Express Locos name at Sinsheim, Germany, in 2001. The magazine identifies the model as a 7¼ inch DB V221 and describes the example on display as unfinished, though already presented in maroon livery with prominent metal grilles around the windows and along the bodysides.

The project was described as having a one-piece moulded body on a chassis similar to the Express Locos Class 42 Warship, with 8 hp of traction. The account also highlights the larger continental loading gauge.

MRW confirms that a mould associated with this locomotive survives. Although a photograph of the unfinished Sinsheim exhibit is documented, we have not yet confirmed a photograph of a completed example or established whether a production locomotive was finished. The subsequent 5 inch DB V200 represented elsewhere on this page must not be mistaken for this early 7¼ inch project.

Historical reference: 7¼ Inch Gauge Society News, Issue 97 (2001), printed page 50. The original exhibit photograph was credited to Richard Shaw. The unfinished locomotive was displayed by Express Locos at Sinsheim.
